Rice Bran and Germ An Energy SuperFood
The bran and germ of rice is one of the superfoods used in my Four Step Natural Cure Plan
Rice bran and germ are packed with supernutrition. They contain all of the B vitamins and are especially rich in vitamin E, dietary fibers, and amino acids. They also include an important antioxidant called gamma-oryzanol that occurs naturally only in the germ and bran of rice.
Gamma-oryzanol effectively lowers blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It seems to work by impairing cholesterol absorption in the digestive tract. Evidence from animal studies suggests that gamma-oryzanol may also help prevent ulcers. Lipoic acid is another of the more than 100 antioxidants contained in rice bran and germ. Lipoic acid increases energy in muscles, protects the liver, and stabilizes blood sugar to calm down sugar cravings and energy swings. The bran and germ contain 18 to 23% oils - omega 3, omega 6, and omega 9 - which are all essential to maintain radiant, vibrant health. Rice bran and germ are also excellent sources of dietary fiber. They help prevent constipation, decrease transit time of food through the colon, and decrease insulin response after a meal high in carbohydrates. As a basic food, rice provides more than one fifth of all the calories consumed by the entire global human community, most of it in the form of white rice. Yet once rice has been milled and polished into white rice, there’s hardly any nutrition left in it besides a few empty calories. In fact, white rice is so low in nutritional value that United States law requires white rice to be enriched with vitamins and iron before it can be sold as food in this country. Even bugs are reluctant to eat white rice!
In the past, the bran and germ were thrown away because they became rancid when separated from the whole grain, which prevented the whole rice from being shipped or stored for very long. Rancidity not only destroys the nutritional value of the bran and germ, it also depletes the human body of its stores of vitamin E, another important antioxidant. Fortunately, thanks to recent developments, it’s now possible to “stabilize” the bran and germ so they can be safely stored.Brown rice has traditionally been viewed as “food of the poor,” yet it is nutritionally-rich beyond measure when compared with white rice. It is a rich source of hypoallergenic protein, nutritional oils, dietary fiber, and many nutrients essential to life. This very broad spectrum of nutrients supports vitality, stamina, and good health. Stabilized rice bran and germ is one of the world’s great superfoods. I include it in my
Super Kamut
formula to make it easy for my patients to take it every day, along with the other
superfoods.
It is especially beneficial to my patients when they are restoring their health using my
